What Should a Tradesman Website Include?
A simple checklist for plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers, landscapers and other UK trades. Get these right and your site will look professional, work on phones and help customers find and contact you.
Why a simple site beats no site
Many tradesmen still rely only on word of mouth or a Facebook page. The problem: when someone searches for “plumber near me” or “electrician [town]”, Google shows businesses with a proper website and a Google Business Profile. If you don’t have a site, you’re invisible for those searches. A small, focused website that loads quickly and makes it easy to call or enquire is enough to start—you don’t need dozens of pages or fancy features.
What pages and sections matter
For most trades, a homepage plus a few clear sections works well. Your homepage should state who you are, what you do and where you cover. Include a clear list of services (e.g. emergency repairs, boiler installation, EICRs, rewires, roofing repairs, garden design) and the areas you serve (towns, postcodes or “within X miles of…”). A dedicated “Contact” or “Get a quote” section with a form and phone number is essential. You don’t need a blog or news section unless you plan to keep it updated.
Mobile-friendly design
Most people search for a tradesperson on their phone. If your site is slow or hard to use on mobile, they’ll leave and call a competitor. Your site should be responsive: text readable without zooming, buttons large enough to tap and forms that work on small screens. Google also uses mobile-friendliness as a ranking factor, so a site that works well on phones is better for local search.
Contact: click-to-call and a form
Your phone number should be easy to find and, on mobile, tappable so one tap starts the call. A contact form is useful for customers who prefer to type (e.g. “I need a quote for…”) and gives you their email and message in one place. Keep the form short: name, phone, email and a message box are usually enough. Make sure form submissions reach you (email or a dashboard you check) and that you reply quickly.
Fast loading and reliable hosting
Slow sites frustrate visitors and rank worse in Google. Your site should load in a few seconds on a normal connection. That means reliable hosting, images that aren’t huge and no unnecessary clutter. Hosting should include SSL (HTTPS) so the site is secure and browsers don’t show a “not secure” warning. Many customers expect it and Google prefers secure sites.
Updates without extra fees
Your phone number, areas or services will change over time. You need a way to update the site without paying per change or waiting weeks. Whether you do it yourself or someone else does it for you, simple text and detail updates should be straightforward and affordable. Some providers charge per change; others include a set number of revisions per month. For a tradesman website, the latter is usually better value.
Optional but useful
Project or before/after photos: Builders, roofers, landscapers and similar trades can win more quotes by showing past work. A simple gallery or a few photos on the site helps.
Certifications and insurance: Gas Safe, NICEIC, TrustMark or similar badges reassure customers. If you’re registered, say so and link to the scheme if relevant.
Reviews: Testimonials or a link to your Google reviews build trust. You don’t need a fancy widget—a short quote and a name (or “Google review”) is enough.
